We're Undergoing Construction…

This summer, CPDMH will be renovating its Central Processing and Sterilization Area (CSR). The renovations will improve work flow, enhance storage areas, and improve compliance to current infection control standards. The project is being done based on a recommendation from Accreditation Canada.

“When we received the report from Accreditation Canada in Fall 2009, it was recommended that we renovate our CSR department to improve our compliance with current infections control standards,” stated Esther Houle, CPDMH’s Chief Nursing Officer. “Typically, our hospital has very low infection control rates and we decided to move forward with this project to ensure that these low rates continue.”

“I’m very excited about the renovation project and the changes it will bring to the department,” stated SusanHemeon, CSR Technician with CPDMH. “The infection control rate at our hospital is very low and with the upcoming changes in layout and flow to the department, we will be following the best practices in infection control and improve on overall patient safety.”

“The safety of our patients, and of course our staff, is our number one priority and the renovations to the CSR will further minimize any potential risks to the wellbeing of our pat ients, while improving our compliance with current infection control standards”, Stated Toni Surko, CEO of CPDMH. “Unfortunately, the renovation will not increase the size of the CSR department and there will still be issues regarding the department’s capacity to manage future growth.”

The renovation project will be done in three phases with phase one beginning on July 26 and lasting for three weeks until August 13. During phase 1, the Hospital’s operating room will be closed.

“Our operating room is usually closed for three weeks during the year, one week in March and two in August. This year, we knew that we would be renovating the CSR department so we did not do the March shut down. Instead we moved that week to the end of July,” continued Mrs. Houle. “As a result of this small change, our overall surgical volumes will not be effected by the upcoming renovations. However if phase 1 takes longer than three weeks to complete, we have a plan in place to ensure that our surgical services will return to normal.”

It is expected that all three phases of the renovation project will be completed in October with some minimal disruption to the operating room and Emergency departments.   When the renovation is complete, it will secure a protected area for sterile storage of medical equipment, devices and supplies.

Patients will see fees increase for some services at CPDMH
Exciting News

Patients will see fees increase for some services at CPDMH

With the potential of a funding freeze for Ontario hospitals in the 2010/11 fiscal year, CPDMH will be increasing some of its service fees.

“We were told by the Ministry of Health and Long –Term Care to provide budget plans for three possible scenarios for the upcoming fiscal year - zero increase in provincial funding, a 1% increase and a 2% increase. Since we are required to submit a balanced budget, our only option was to increase some of the fees currently charged to our patients,” stated Darlene Mitchell, AED of Support Services and Chief Financial Officer of CPDMH. “As a result, we will be increasing our per visit parking rates from $2 to $3 and introducing a fee for the usage of the TV and telephone in patient rooms on April 1, 2010.”

Currently patients receive telephone and TV services for free and are charged $10 for the headsets required to hear the TV. After consulting other hospitals in the region, CPDMH learned that most of the facilities were charging a fee for telephone and TV and realized it was a way to increase the Hospital’s revenues instead of cutting services.

“We were hoping to avoid any fee increases but it quickly became apparent that if we didn’t add these charges we would be looking at eliminating some of our healthcare services,” continued Mrs. Mitchell. “We hope the community will understand the position we are in.”

Effective April 1, CPDMH will begin charging patients $25 for the use of the television and $10 for the telephone service. These rates include taxes and will be a fixed fee for the entire length of stay on the inpatient unit.

Weekly and monthly parking passes for the hospital will also see a slight increase on April 1. Weekly passes will be $15 and monthly passes will be $35.

CPDMH Foundation introduces the Compassionate Caregiver Program
Exciting News

CPDMH Foundation Adding a Grateful Patient Program

Did a caregiver, staff member or volunteer make a difference during your time at CPDMH?  You can now recognize that individual as a Compassionate Caregiver by making a donation to the CPDMH Foundation in their honour.

“Our Foundation regularly receives donations to thank volunteers, staff, physicians and even a particular department for the care given to a patient and we wanted to implement a program to formally recognize these gifts,” stated Chantelle Troy. “It was also important for us to properly acknowledge the individual that has gone ‘above and beyond’ during a patient’s time at the Hospital.”

When a person makes a donation to this program, they name their “Compassionate Caregiver” who receives a lapel pin unique to  CPDMH. The gift in turn helps the Hospital purchase much needed medical equipment.

How does the Compassionate Caregiver program work?
·        Patients provide a gift to the Foundation in honour of a special caregiver/staff / volunteer/doctor who has positively impacted their experience with our hospital. Donations can be made in person at the Foundation Office, completed online by visiting the Foundation’s website at http://www.carletonplacehospital.ca/foundation_howtogive.aro or mailed to the Foundation office (211 Lake Ave East, Carleton Place, On, K7C 1J4).
·        Depending on the success of the program, a monthly or quarterly pinning ceremony will take place. The Compassionate Caregiver(s) will receive a pin unique to CPDMH to wear throughout the Hospital as well as a thank you letter from the CPDMH Foundation.
·        The donor will receive a confirmation of the gift as well as a tax receipt.   It should also be noted that there is no minimum or maximum donation amount required to recognize a Compassionate Caregiver
·        Recognized individuals will be posted on the Hospital’s website as well as in our newsletter.

“We are really excited to be introducing this program because it will provide an opportunity for our staff to be more aware of the impact they are making on the lives of our patients ,” continued Ms. Troy. “In addition, our patients will have a way to formally thank their caregiver while supporting the ongoing equipment needs of the hospital.”

For more information about the Compassionate Caregiver program please contact Chantelle Troy at the Foundation Office at 613-257-2200 ext 856 or e-mail ctroy@carletonplacehosp.com.
